Misunderstanding about fuel saving

Misunderstanding 1: Save fuel by taxiing in neutral

When many car owners are driving their own cars downhill or decelerating, they are used to taxi in neutral. They think that the driving method may help to save fuel. This driving method is prohibited by traffic regulations. Actually, for sSedan equipped with EFI engine, this driving method can not help to save fuel. The control systems of most EFI engines have function “less fuel supply in deceleration” or “fuel supply off”. Therefore, taxiing with a certain forward gear may help a car equipped with EFI to save fuel. Taxiing in neutral may cause more fuel consumption.

Misunderstanding 2: Driving at low speed by high forward gears may help to save fuel

Many people think that driving at high speed by low forward gears may cause more fuel consumption and that driving at high speed by high forward gears may help to save fuel. Any car has an own economic hourly speed at which the driving can provide the best fuel consumption performance. If below or above, this economic hourly speed, the oil consumption may go up. If a car is running in a too low speed, the fuel consumption may significantly increase. Many beginners just conduct shift-up operation until the engine exceeds much a specified rpm, which may cause fuel waste.

Misunderstanding 3: Driving by low forward gears may help to save fuel

Driving by low forward gears may cause more fuel consumption. Therefore, you should change the gear to high gears when the MT (manual transmission) car is running at a stable speed. The most economical manner is by driving the car in a constant speed. If you depress heavily the accelerator pedal and make the engine run in an unnecessary speed, the fuel consumption may become high. Therefore, everyone should make a good habit to change gear in the proper speed (under a proper engine speed).

Misunderstanding 4: Modify the car and use fuel-efficient product for fuel saving

Although there are a wide variety of fuel-efficient products, at present no specific standards are used to evaluate the real effect of these products. Many engines are equipped with in-built own fuel-efficient devices. Engine calibration has been considered in the comprehensive evaluation of the complete vehicle. ECU has an own reasonable control program. After modification, the fuel-efficient performance of the car is lowered. Therefore, do not use these fuel-efficient products.
